A WOMAN died when the car she was driving was involved in a crash early today.

Paramedics and fire crews were called to the scene of the crash on the B1222, near Sherburn-in-Elmet, at about 12.15am.

The victim's red Volkswagen Golf was involved in a collision with a silver Ford Focus at the junction with the south-bound slip road of the A1.

Fire crews used cutting equipment to free the trapped woman, thought to be in her early thirties, and she was taken by ambulance to St James's Hospital in Leeds. The male driver of the Ford Focus, who suffered whiplash in the collision, is currently helping police with their inquiries.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the crash, or anyone who may have witnessed a silver Ford Focus being driven in Sherburn-in-Elmet at about midnight last night.
