GNER, the York-based train operator, has been described as "a beacon of excellence" by experts re-awarding the company with Investors in People (IIP) status.

Two IIP assessors travelled throughout GNER's 1,000-mile route along Britain's east coast to examine its practices and talk to staff.

Both reported that the company "exemplified some of the best and most outstanding people management practices" and stated: "The company is a beacon of excellence which is reflected in the consistent and enthusiastic feedback from employees."

One of the assessors, Lesley Meacham, said that for a company awaiting the outcome of a franchise bid in the spring, staff morale and confidence were remarkably high. GNER was the first UK train operator to achieve IIP status across the whole organisation and the first to develop partnership agreements with all four trade unions.

GNER chief executive Christopher Garnett, said: "GNER's key strength is its people - and it is great to be part of such a wonderful team.

"Once again, they have demonstrated their boundless enthusiasm and dedication to the task of delivering an ever-improving railway for our passengers."
