I SUPPORT the drive to remove street clutter from the city centre initiated by the York Civic Trust, (Evening Press, January 4)
But why stop there? Many residential areas, and most of the main roads into York, resemble Steptoe's yard on scrap day with a vast array of steel poles carrying, in many cases, pointless road signs which could either be removed or at least doubled up on the same pole to reduce visual blight.
The input of City of York Council is interesting. It is they who have spent vast amounts of public money creating much of this unnecessary street junk and now they are going to spend our cash again in correcting the situation. Crazy.
In some parts of the country where local authorities care about the aesthetics of what they do, even traffic lights are mounted on decorative poles and guard rails are embellished and painted.
In York, unfortunately, despite the York Pride campaign, nobody seems to think this way, concentrating on wasting as much money as fast as possible.
