THE diggers are moving in to start work on four new primary schools in York.
Under a £15 million Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme, work was starting this week to replace Hob Moor and Hob Moor Oaks, in Acomb, St Oswald's, in Fulford, and St Barnabas, in the Leeman Road area, with four new primary schools.
Coun Carol Runciman, City of York Council's executive member for education, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity to give children in the city the new school buildings that they need and deserve.
"It has taken a lot of hard work by officers over the last year to get to this stage and now the building work is due to start, the results of all that effort will be able to be seen.
"The Liberal Democrat group is committed to ensuring that all children in our city receive a top quality education and I will be following progress on the new schools with interest.
"The day the children move into the completed buildings will be one for great celebration."
The formal contracts are due to be signed shortly and completion is expected by March 2006.
