YORK'S unsung heroes will be celebrated at a sparkling awards ceremony this week.
The winners of the York Community Pride campaign will be announced at a gala event at York Racecourse tomorrow.
Jointly run by the Evening Press and City of York Council, the awards celebrate individuals and groups whose hard work and community spirit have made a real contribution to the city.
Winners will be announced for each of the 11 categories: Spirit of Youth, Public Sector Hero, Volunteer of the Year, Charity Fundraiser of the Year, Mother's Pride, Community Pride Person of the Year, Service With A Smile, Best Community Project, Green Pride, Best Business Pride Project, and Best School Project.
Each entry was considered by a panel of expert judges, including the editor of the Evening Press, Kevin Booth, and the chief executive of City of York Council, David Atkinson.
Entertainment on the night will be supplied by members of the local group Pure Silk, who have performed with the likes of Atomic Kitten, Darius and Blue.
The campaign has won the personal backing of Tony Blair, as well as a host of high-profile businesses and celebrities.
In a letter to Mr Booth, the Prime Minister stated: "What makes the initiative so worthwhile is that by deservedly recognising some of this area's unsung heroes and heroines, it will also encourage others to follow their example and give more back to this community."
Actress Jean Alexander, better known as Coronation Street's Hilda Ogden, also lent her support to the campaign.
She said: "You have a splendid city and you have every reason to be proud of it.
"York Community Pride is a super idea - long may it continue."
