THE mother of murdered York backpacker Caroline Stuttle has been recognised as one of the bravest women of 2004.
Readers of Best Magazine recognised courageous Marjorie Marks-Stuttle, from Pocklington, for overcoming the tragedy to form a charity which is making a difference to thousands of young travellers.
Caroline, 19, was killed while on a backpacking holiday in Australia with her best friend, Sarah Holiday.
Ian Douglas Previte was recently jailed for life for her murder.
Marjorie decided that her daughter's death would not be in vain and formed Caroline's Rainbow Foundation, to help young backpackers abroad.
Already £60,000 has been raised which will be used to sponsor rooms in youth hostels for backpackers, as well as producing safety videos for schools and seminars on safe travelling and backpacking.
Marjorie said: "Nothing will bring my daughter Caroline back, but knowing I'm doing something to help other young people stay safe while travelling the world helps me to cope with the pain of losing her.
"If I can save just one life, then it will be worthwhile."
