AN inspired substitution enabled Volunteer Arms to make a significant move up the York John Smith's Sunday Morning Football League division one table.

Their clash at Wigginton Grasshoppers was in the balance with Volunteer just ahead 2-1 at half-time thanks to goals goals by O'Shaunessy and Bonarius.

But the introduction of Lee Bond, who struck a hat-trick, saw Volunteer take control and cruise to a 6-1 win. Kevin Jackson added their other goal.

Luke Roberts scored Wigginton's only goal with a cracking strike.

The win saw Volunteer move in to third place above Derwent United who were thankful for a single strike from Collins which earned them all three points at Pocklington.

Marcia were thwarted in their attempt to pull away at the top when their game at Blacksmiths Arms was called off just prior to kick-off.

The home side failed to raise a team and with title rivals Hounds involved in the County Cup the other chasing teams like Volunteer, Derwent United and Severus SC were able to close the gap.

Severus gained sweet revenge for their opening day defeat when a brace from Moss earned them a 2-1 win at Thorpe United for whom Wood was on the mark.

Shipton continued their dominance at the top of division two with a hard-earned three points at home to Hemingbrough.

Blake hit the only goal of a tight first half before he added his second to goals from Fratson and Duxberry to secure a 4-0 win.

Danny Gray and Wayne Carter each scored twice to add to goals from Barker, Moore and Stone as Acomb SC won 7-1 at Haxby Lions, whose consolation came from Michael Taylor.

Two goals from Chris Dyson gave Nestl Flag a 2-0 win at Burnholme Earswick. Edward VII overwhelmed struggling Boot & Slipper with Dransfield, O'Connell and Love all scoring hat-tricks in a 12-0 romp.

It was a bad day for all the top sides in division three.

Leaders Bishopthorpe had to be content with a point at Shoulder of Mutton, where goals from Broadbent and Manns had given them a two goal lead. Green pulled one back before the break and Andy Bruce hit a second half leveller.

Joe Smart gave Fulford the lead against Beeswing but two goals from Norman gave the visitors the points.

Second-placed The Plough travelled to bottom of the table Copmanthorpe and, despite taking the lead through Thompson, had to settle for a point as Matty Bastock equalised for the home side.

Barlby got the better of neighbours Hambleton winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from Scott and Davis. Farrar netted for Hambleton.

Ambler, M Lund, D Lund and Dixon got the goals for Inland Revenue in their 4-2 defeat of Real Way Station. Simpson scored twice in Heworths 3-0 win at The Five Lions.

Division Four leaders Skelton opened the scoring at Rumours on the half-hour through the prolific Neale Holmes.

But Gargan levelled within a minute of the restart and despite coming under an all-out assault from the Skelton attack, Rumours' defence held firm to earn a point.

Bay Horse (Tadcaster) could not take advantage of Skelton's slip as they went down to a 4-2 defeat at Enterprise.

Acomb Celtic, however, did cash in as two goals from Ian Rankeillor and one from Neil Rankeillor secured a 3-1 win at Castle Howard Ox.

Late goals from a Craig Anderson penalty and Ryan Chadwick gave Selby Olympia Reserves a narrow 2-1 win at Poppleton Road WMC after Dickinson had given the home side the lead.

Ward and Charlesworth were on the mark as Albion Vaults beat Wilberfoss 2-0. Gipsy Moth moved off the bottom with a 6-1 win over Black Swan.
