AS someone who was involved in the recent ballot about ResPark in Millfield Road your correspondent, A K Lancelott, would have known that, far from the council seeking to impose such a scheme upon residents, we were merely responding to the calls from residents for action to deal with commuter parking (Letters, December 2).
He is right that I am delighted that the council now has the resources to progress this request made nearly four years ago.
Far from "bringing in a lot of money" for the council, I can assure Mr Lancelott that, until this year, the cost of running the ResPark scheme has been subsidised by the charge payers of York by up to £86,000 a year.
Increasing the charge this year has removed that burden because the full cost of the scheme now falls, quite rightly, on those who benefit from it. The small surplus that will be made this year will be used to cut the backlog of requests and provide a contingency fund to deal with any possible shortfall in predicted income.
Coun Ann Reid,
Executive member for
planning and transport,
Grassholme, York.
