After three weeks lay-off it was back to Yorkshire League action for York Rugby Union Club development squad's U17s, who beat hosts Hull 17-5.

York's pack was in dominant form. The front row was bolstered by the return of hooker Tom Bewick, while in the second row James Gibson and Alf Jackson controlled the lineout possession.

Despite going close to scoring through wingman Tom Elliott it took York until midway through the first half to get their first score.

First to a loose ball in the Hull 22, the York pack mauled towards the line before flanker Jake Humble peeled off for his first try for his new club. Nathan Forrest slotted the extras for a 7-0 half-time lead.

York introduced the pace of Dan Simpson to the backs at the start of the second period as they sought to press home their advantage.

A trademark run from Simpson was halted deep in the Hull half but the forwards took the ball on for Bewick to pick up at the base of the ruck to crash over for an unconverted try.

As the clock ticked down Hull made one last effort and forced their way over the York line where the referee adjudged the ball had been grounded. The try, however, was not converted.

Any hopes of a late revival by the hosts was scotched almost immediately.

Skipper Chris Woolley went on a rampaging run into the Hull half, sucked in the defenders before offloading to Elliot.

He was held just short of line but Jacob Hunt was on hand to finish off the move and the match with a try.
