100 years ago: The champion trout of the past season, caught in the waters fished over by the members of the Black Ox Angling Club by a man from Leeming Bar, had just been "set up" and was in the possession of the landlord of the Leeming Bar Hotel. It weighed over four pounds all round, and was more than 2ft long, and 22in in girth. It was splendidly mounted, and was certainly one of the best fish which had ever been taken out of Bedale Beck. It was caught with the worm in Leeming Loch.

50 years ago: Bridlington magistrates granted a licence to Bridlington Corporation for public dancing at the Spa Royal Hall, for the evening of Christmas Day this year. The deputy town clerk said the council felt there was a demand for such a dance, as one took place every Saturday at the Spa Royal Hall, and Christmas Day was on a Saturday this year, and so the council wanted the dance to go ahead and the conditions would be the same as on other Saturdays. It was the first occasion the application had been made to the bench, and the council felt that while Christmas was a religious festival, dancing would be in harmony with the spirit of Christmas. There was no police objection to the application, and it was a matter of policy for the bench, and so the licence was granted.

25 years ago: Inquiries were being made about the possibility of staging a heat of It's A Knockout at Castle Howard, but hopes were possibly going to be dashed of entering a team to represent Ryedale, due to spending cuts and the large amount of money that would be needed to put a team together. If a programme was filmed at the stately home in 1980 the entire area would receive enormous publicity, and the admission fees which were estimated at £15,000. However, there would also be an expenditure of more than £11,000 to train a team and to set up the necessary arena, and if a local team reached the European final in Belgium the sponsoring local authority was expected to provide 98 gifts for the team members of the other seven European finalists, plus seven gifts from the local civic head for his or her equivalent abroad.
