A York company has landed the top prize in the npower Conservation Awards, organised by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust, thanks to a device called Litterbuggy which helps keeps the countryside safe and tidy.

Graham Walker, of Ecological Innovations Ltd, Newton-upon-Derwent, received his winning certificate in the business innovations category at the npower awards from Kevin Rodgers, npower's community relations manager for Yorkshire.

Litterbuggy is a pocket-sized plastic container with removable lid so that any waste pushed into it cannot escape. Primarily aimed at anglers, it is also handy for ramblers, golfers, cyclists, tradesmen and motorists.

The environmentally-friendly product was designed as waste fishing line is becoming a much greater environmental issue and anglers have been looking for a quick and easy way of dealing with their waste securely.

At the same time litter, such as crisp packets, snack wrap and sweet wrappers in the countryside can easily be disposed of without causing harm to wildlife or the environment.

Mr Rodgers said: "npower has hundreds of staff and thousands of customers in this area so we want to be able to help with what's important to them. The Conservation Awards recognise efforts made to protect and enhance Yorkshire's wildlife and environment in four categories; Business, Individual, Schools and Community Groups."

He continued: "Litterbuggy is a fantastic invention and is already proving itself to be invaluable in protecting the environment.

"As the favoured energy supplier to the region, npower rewards people and organisations that are creative with their energy too, and we will continue to do so in the future. "
