GOALS galore were the order of the day in the York John Smith's Sunday Morning League cup competitions.
No fewer than 174 were scored in the 23 ties played at an average of 7.5 per tie.
Last season's beaten Challenge Trophy finalists Derwent United needed extra-time to get the better of second division Acomb WMC.
Derwent goals by Collins (2) and Towse were cancelled out by two Steve Stone penalties and a strike from Wayne Carter but Hopwood was on hand to send Derwent through in the extra period.
Nestl Flag took the lead at Wigginton Grasshoppers through Dyson and Bullock before Coates and Johnson made it 2-2. Extra-time failed to separate the teams but Flag converted all their penalties to go through 5-4 in the shoot-out.
Goals from Smith, Clamp, Wood and Cliff saw Thorpe United win 4-2 at Selby Olympia WMC whose goals both came from the penalty spot from Lanaghan and Harkin.
Bond, Richardson and Stabler helped Pocklington to a 3-2 win at Volunteers.
Neil Hinde scored twice as Acomb SC won 4-3 at Haxby Lions after extra time. Hunter also hit a double as Hounds beat Blacksmiths Arms 3-1.
Three goals in the first half hour from Smith (2) and Collins saw Hemingbrough progress. Teale added a fourth with Leeming netting a consolation for Burnholme (Earswick).
Holders Marcia were frustrated when their tie at Edward VII was postponed by referee Lol Cussons because of the dangerous state of the pitch.
