THE transformation of the Aldwark area of York was at the heart of Lord Esher's vision for the city when he wrote his famous report, published in 1968.
Lord Esher saw a future where industrial buildings could be taken out of the city and people brought back in; where slum housing could be knocked down and new housing developed within the city walls.
Today, the area around Aldwark, Bedern, St Andrewgate and St Saviourgate bears witness to what can be achieved when city planners and housing developers work together to make vision a reality.
The picture, taken in 1972, right, shows a view of Aldwark before development, looking down towards Goodramgate. On the left are houses which have since been redeveloped; on the right Ebor Brewery buildings.
