POLICE are appealing for witnesses to a disturbing incident in which a man was left with serious facial injuries after an unprovoked street attack.
The man was walking in Navigation Road when he was approached by another man drinking a can of lager who punched him in the face without warning.
The victim suffered a broken cheekbone and has since undergone an operation and had a metal plate inserted in his face.
PC Hamish Halloway, of York Police, said the attacker is thought to have been with two other men and a woman when he lashed out on Sunday at 10.20pm.
He said that the driver of an estate car seen driving from Navigation Road into Walm-gate at the time of the attack may hold vital information.
The attacker is described as being white, aged 18 to 25, with a tanned complexion and short dark scruffy hair. He was wearing a T-shirt, jeans and trainers.
Anyone with information is asked to phone PC Halloway on 0845 60 60 24 7 or Crime-stoppers on 0800 555 111.
