A YORK company employing 67 disabled people has won a contract to sew 30,000 garments for the United States military.
The order sees a return to clothing manufacture for the staff of Remploy York after three years concentrating on packaging contracts.
The sewing team at Redeness Road will be stitching together a variety of garments knitted at other branches of Remploy, one of the UK's leading employers of disabled people.
These items include navy blue sweaters for the US Air Force and black sweaters for the US army.
Remploy has traditionally manufactured clothing for the United Kingdom's armed forces, although the bulk of that work was placed offshore several years ago.
Carl Ventress, Remploy York manager, said he and his staff were delighted to be back on the sewing machines.
"They're tried and very much trusted, in fact, just like the sweaters we are producing!"
