Paul Hanagan, who ended the Flat turf season at Doncaster on Saturday with a 16-1 winner, started the all-weather winter campaign with a 14-1 success at Wolverhampton yesterday.

The Malton jockey, gunning for his maiden century of winners and now just ten short of his target, heads to Lingfield tomorrow with good prospects of a double.

Hanagan, a fomer apprentice champion, teams-up with recent winner Heartsonfire in the first division of the betdirect.co.uk Nursery for Paul D'Arcy, and also has a fighting chance aboard Tiger Dawn in the second leg.

The latter is trained by William Haggas, who gave Hanagan the leg-up on the triumphant Del Mar Sunset at Wolverhampton yesterday.

Tiger Dawn was the easy winner of a selling race last time at the West Midlands track and though he faces a stiffer test here encouragement can be drawn from his latest three-lengths success. From the foot of the handicap, he has lots of appeal.

Former top jockey Walter Swinburn, who has taken over the training reins this week from his father-in-law Peter Harris, has a good chance of having his first winner with Blue Mariner in the Bet Direct Handicap (division two).

The four-year-old prevailed by a neck from Truman at Wolverhampton last time and would barely need to produce much improvement on that form to follow-up here. Steve Carson has the mount.

Over the sticks at Kelso, Russian Sky can land the Scott Coppola Conditional Jockeys' Novices' Handicap Hurdle.

Trained not far from the course by Harriet Graham, whose horses have been in excellent form, Russian Sky gained a gutsy win at Sedgefield a fortnight ago.

With Ciaran Eddery back in the saddle, this strong-galloping five-year-old can oblige again and he gets my Nap vote.

Giuliani merits attention in the Dixon Heaney Handicap Hurdle.

Trained by Howard Johnson, the four-year-old rattled up a brace of wins in the spring in novice company.

He looks mature enough to take on these more seasoned campaigners and can pick up where he left off, on a winning note.
