THE Royal British Legion has launched its annual Poppy Appeal and, on behalf of the citizens of York, I am honoured to support this most worthy cause.
Last year the Poppy Appeal raised more than £50,000 in the city of York with the money being spent on welfare schemes, benevolent services, resettlement and work for the disabled.
The amount raised reflects the hard work that is done by a large number of voluntary organisers and collectors who raise the bulk of this money.
Over the years, the public and businesses in York have given generously to the appeal. I do hope that you will continue to give it the support it so rightly deserves.
The Honorary Poppy Appeal organiser for the city of York is Joe Munday, who is anxious to recruit new collectors, particularly for street collections which this year will be held between November 10 and 13. If you are able to give a little of your time to help with the Poppy Appeal, please contact Denise Edgar on (01904) 670677.
Remembrance Sunday is on November 14 and we shall be at the City Cenotaph at the top of Leeman Road for the Annual Service. This is a public service and, as in previous years, I hope it will be well supported.
Councillor Janet Looker,
Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of York,
The Mansion House,
St Helen's Square, York.
