THERE was a major shock in ladies division one of the York and District Badminton League when Clifton visited York RI and won 6-3.
Ros Ellis and Joyce Petch took all three for RI, but Clifton's Karen Broster and Shelagh Barker clinched the surprise triumph with a three and ten over Anne Murray and Jo Ladds.
Drax/Selby Ladies played well to beat Nestl Rowntree 6-3, with Alison Dinsdale and Gayle Bradley the pick of the pairs with three straight wins for a return of 90-28.
York RI also beat Clifton in men's division one. Russell Binns and Craig Liversedge top-scored for RI with three straight wins for a total of 90-49 in the 8-1 victory. Phil Sinton and Richard Mackintosh took the Clifton consolation with a 5-15, 17-14, 15-11 win over Richard Johnson and Peter Crosland.
Clifton bounced back at Selby Jubilee with a 7-2 win.
Andy Hatfield and Peter Murphy took both Jubilee wins in a good display for the newly promoted club. Sinton and Mackintosh took the only Clifton maximum, including a seven and two over Hatfield and Murphy.
Tadcaster 86 beat Pocklington 6-3 in Men's Two. Andrew Cooper and Bill Marley topped the home averages with three straight wins for 90-53, which included an 11 and 10 over Matt Burrows and Ted Donkin who took two Pocklington wins.
York RI 'A' hammered RI 'B' 9-0 in Mixed One. P Hardcastle and N Milsted were the most successful pair with three wins for 90-33.
Knavesmire were good value for a 5-4 win at Pocklington 'A' in Mixed Two. Burrows and Yvonne Neave took two Pock wins but Dave Brogden and Joy Wilson swung the match for Knavesmire with a four and 13 over Burrows and Neave.
Neil Richardson and Clare Frost took three Selby Jubilee wins for 98-52 but RI Tuesday/Thursday 'A' won the Mixed Three match 6-3.
Ian Sinker and Marlene Woodward crowned a good RI display with a match-winning four and four.
Clifton 'C' have made a fine start to their Mixed Three campaign with three wins from three, a 7-2 win at RI Tuesday/ Thursday 'B' being followed by 8-1 and 6-3 wins over Nestle Rowntree 'B' and YUSC 'A'.
Paul Waterhouse and Lorraine Ellis have been the most consistent pairing, taking nine wins from nine for a three-match total of 272-128.
Fulfordgate 'B' kicked off their Mixed Five season with a 9-0 win over Middlethorpe, though the match was closer than the final score suggests.
Club secretaries are reminded the league AGM decided to canvas the clubs regarding an end-of-season social event but the response so far has been poor. Could clubs send in their forms to the match secretary as soon as possible.
