MORE primary schools in York were having their first taste of competitive tag rugby league today in a York City Knights-led mini-tournament.
Seven schools were set to enter teams in the event at Heworth ARLC, with the sides likely to be split into two pools with the group winners meeting in the final.
Competing schools are Heworth Primary School, Hob Moor, Kirk Hammerton, Lord Deramore's, Scarcroft, St Lawrence's and St Paul's, with some of them set to enter more than one team.
Knights community development officer Jason Ramshaw, who returned this week from his tour to New Zealand with the British Police RL team, said: "We've set this up for schools with no previous rugby league experience.
"All the schools in there are new to the game, then when we have our main tournament in May, they will be experienced and able to come in to take part in that as well."
Ramshaw, North Yorkshire RL development officer Ian Wilson, mascot Norris the Knight and a Knights player were to be in attendance.
A report of the tournament will be carried in next week's School Sport section in the Evening Press.
