IN my interview with the Evening Press in October, I was pointing out - in the context of the Hartlepool by-election - that it is possible for the Conservatives to win an election without winning seats in some cities.
The Conservatives won four elections from 1979, for instance, without ever winning Hartlepool.
However I also went on to say that our aim was to win as many votes as possible in every seat in the country - a point not made with equal prominence by the Evening Press (Ian Drury, October 8).
I have already made clear that there are no "no go" areas for the Conservatives; I have reinforced this point in interviews since in Scotland and the North East of England.

Leader of the Conservative Party,
