A HIGH-FLYING legal eagle reached for the skies, after making a successful bid for a dream lot in a charity auction.

Simon Hetherton, of York-based Hethertons Solicitors, tested his skills in a Tucano Trainer jet computer simulator during a VIP visit to RAF Linton-on-Ouse.

The senior partner "crashed" on his first attempt at landing - but spread his wings second time around and hit the runway without a hitch.

Mr Hetherton, 58, bid for the lot at a charity auction at the Royal Armouries, Leeds, in an event raising cash for the Reserve Forces Cadets' Association.

The flight prize was an easy choice for the leading lawman with a long-standing interest in aviation.

He said: "I've held a private pilot's licence for microlites and hang gliders.

"My feet never left the ground, but it was a very realistic experience."

He said: "My abiding conclusion is that we civilians should know how young pilots of the future are being trained, how dependant we are on them and what an important role they play."
