IN a crime-ridden society, the police are an easy target for criticism. So tonight we are delighted to report some glowing praise for their actions.
Ebor Fisheries boss Steve Tipping dialled 999 after burglars broke into his shop. A team of five officers arrived less than three minutes later and caught the trespassers in the act.
That is a terrific response, and well worthy of public recognition. It comes on a day when two new initiatives will further rebuild public confidence in the force.
Serving on-the-spot fines to youths setting off fireworks is just the sort of proactive policing residents want to see. And the new phone hotline, launched by Chief Constable Della Cannings, can only make for a better service.
