THE carnage on the A19 between Fulford and Barlby continues with last week's fatal accident involving a bus ("Hero of A19 crash hell", October 21).

For the communities living on or adjacent to this stretch of trunk road, the problems are only too obvious as an Escrick resident pointed out in your columns (Letters, October 23).

Although there is a speed limit through the village, this is little consolation with the speed that some vehicles come through. Some years ago I called for a 50 miles per hour limit on the entire stretch of the A19 between Fulford and Barlby because there is no doubt that the speed of vehicles is a continuing factor in so many accidents.

We also have had a second incident within a matter of weeks of an articulated lorry turning over on the roundabout at the A19/A64 junction.

This can have happened for only one of two reasons. Either the vehicle was badly loaded or the driver was going too fast.

Such an accident causes enormous disruption and costs not only to individuals but also in terms of police time and the other authorities. Are drivers ever prosecuted after such an incident?
