EARLY days, certainly, but this year's fireworks season has begun in relative calm.

No sign yet of the exploding telephone boxes and wheelie bins which brought terror to many York streets 12 months ago.

That suggests that the new legislation is working. Furthermore, a trading standards spot check found ten out of 12 York fireworks outlets obeyed the rules and did not sell to a 15-year-old boy.

The two shops who broke the law deserve much more than a rocket.

The message is simple: we can stop youngsters messing about with fireworks by cutting off their supply.
