Heavy mid-week rain ruined the chances of fishing the Yorkshire Ouse Championship.

With the river swollen to around 12 feet above its normal level, the organisers had no option to pull the plug on the blue riband event. Other matches washed away in the floods included Tadcaster, Bradford City, the RSPS Tekneek Trabucco Middle Swale Championships and the Jim Batty Memorial match on the Upper Swale.

With all the North-East rivers suffering from flooding it was left to the region's stillwater fisheries to provide the best of the action.

Organiser Mick Addinall (Spectrum Auto Services) had the top result winning his own sell-out 40-peg open at the Carpvale complex.

Drawn on peg 21 on Cyprio, the York-based ace began by introducing two pots full of chopped cat meat and pellets at 11 metres. Offering a single grain of Koshida cat meat on a size 12 to 0.20 Novatech line, he began to put together a superb 20-carp haul of fish to 8lb scaling 105lb and 8oz.

The turning-point, according to Addinall, came when he realised he had fed too heavily and had too many fish in the peg.

He said: "Constant liners were doing my head in so I eased back on the feed. I cut out the pellets and just fed half a dozen bits of meat after each couple of fish which totally calmed the peg down and I was able to hit the bites again."

Rob Morris (Acomb Tackle) took second from peg 10 with 30 smaller carp taken on a mixture of feeder and corn and pole and cat meat for 75lb-1oz. Third place went to Barry Klar (Mitre Pets) with 73lb-14oz of carp on feeder and meat from peg 7.

Others: Alan Pfluger (York) 38-10-0; Terry Carlton (Acomb Tackle) 34-8-0; Dave Spence (Leeds) 29-15-0.

Team Gem teenager Joe Carrass finally got the big pay day he has missed out on several times this season.

After drawing the golden peg on three previous occasions at the Willows, the last of which saw him finish second by two ounces, he finally got it right when he topped the latest Saturday open from peg 40 on Goldrush.

His 68lb-10oz net of carp to 4lb fell to pole and pellet and was worth £500. Dennis Gelderd (Boston Spa) took second place with a rather unusual net of bream and skimmers from peg 44. Fishing double pinkie over groundbait, he bagged 65lb-8oz.

Others: Bernard Guy (East End Park) 40-8-0; Andy Rymer (Sensas Walton) 35-8-0; Ali Wilkes (Tadcaster) 23-6-0; Gordon Fennell (Acomb Tackle) 17-8-0.

Pair pile up Stone prize haul

Two men have dominated this year's angling trophy quest at Burton Stone Lane Working Men's Club.

D Bargewell and A Thompson shared the Aggregate Cup after weighing in with identical hauls after ten matches.

And together as a partnership alongside K Yeomans, they also picked up the team trophy.

Bargewell also won the best fish award, the Nidd Shield, and, with J Dunn, the pairs trophy.

Thompson snared the points trophy and the Derwent Cup.

The best of the rest were B Atkin, who won the veterans cup and the Reg Stubbs Memorial Trophy, and M Thompson, who won the award for the most improved angler.
