JOHN Smith, who two years ago retired as clerk of the course at York racecourse, has been accorded the "Lifetime Achievement Award" by the West Yorkshire Society of Chartered Accountants (WYSCA).

The award recognised the contribution Mr Smith has made to the community and the profession. He was presented with the accolade by WYSCA president David Warren.

Mr Warren said: "John has had an outstanding career in the racing industry and has built up a phenomenal reputation throughout Great Britain and Ireland. He has been instrumental in developing York racecourse to become, in most eyes, the top racecourse in the country."

In its citation, WYSCA said that Mr Smith had been "an excellent ambassador for the Institute of Chartered Accountants by being a committed member in industry who has emphasised the importance of professionalism in a demanding environment."

Mr Smith, born in Nottingham, his horse-loving father in the tyre trade, arrived at York by way of Gerard Bros, part of the Cussons Imperial Leather Group, and Raleigh Cycles for whom he was company secretary.

He was formerly also clerk of the course at Thirsk, where he remains on the board.

He said: "I knew nothing about this award. I was astounded, overwhelmed. It is a great honour."

The award, as well as winners of the West Yorkshire Society of Chartered Accountants Cluster Of Stars Awards, were announced at the Society's annual dinner in Leeds.
