WHEN coal was discovered under the Vale of York, it was said to be the beginning of a new era of prosperity.
Billions of pounds were invested in creating the world's largest deep mine.
Just two decades later, that dream is over. The closure of Riccall Mine today leaves a bitter taste for many miners who know vast coal reserves are being abandoned on economic grounds.
This is a sad day for them, and a thought-provoking day for everyone who wonders how Britain will meet her energy needs in future.
