PAUL Hopwood was the man with all the moves as he won the first York blitz chess tournament held at the RI club in Queen Street.
Blitz involves each player having only five minutes on their clock to complete the game.
Hopwood led from the start, finally winning with a magnificent score of 12 points from 14 games. Martin Carpenter finished second with 10 points, and his brother James took third place with 9. The junior prize went to Richard Allis, and book prizes were awarded to Arron Barker and Pierre Weller.
The popular Scarborough Congress takes place this weekend, with classes for all strength of player. Further details from Eileen Jones, Tel. 01751 433031.
