YORK could lead the way in reducing car use. I support Jonathan Tyler's ideas for moderating traffic ("Putting a price on driving round York", October 13).
Road charging is the best plan. It's worked in London, helps fund public transport improvements and prices out less vital trips.
It cuts congestion and crucial journeys become quicker. Less standing traffic is also a real bonus for air quality.
I am also delighted to learn that York is to have a study on a car club.
Car club members pay a monthly subscription and then hire by the hour for less than usual car hire rates. It's mainstream in Switzerland with thousands of members.
I know many York car owners who only use theirs weekly. They'd be wealthier and still have the security of a back-up by belonging to a car club.
For advice on sharing ownership or starting a car club see Carplus - www.carclubs.org.uk - which includes a tool to add up your car costs. This helps work out potential savings - typically £1,400 per year over private ownership.
