PLANNING chiefs have given the green light to a block of 15 flats in York's central historic conservation area.
The plan to demolish an unlisted two-storey building in Fetter Lane, off Skeldergate, and replace it with a three and four-storey property in its place, was approved.
The building and the adjoining former Capaldi's wholesale site are thought to be the only survivors of the post-war period, when Fetter Lane and Skeldergate were filled with commercial premises.
The application follows a successful proposal by Bryant Homes to build a four and five-storey flats development on the former NCP car park site in Skeldergate.
The latest application had met some objections from residents who complained of overdevelopment, poor design and poor housing conditions.
But urban design and conservation officer Dr Roger Pierce said the plans "will not harm" the setting of nearby listed buildings in Micklegate and will improve their outlook.
