THE Great Yorkshire Air Display at Elvington has been moved from its usual date to August 21-22 to cut down on the amount of traffic in the York area on the August Bank holiday weekend.
However, the traffic problem at this event is compounded by people who insist on watching the display for nothing by parking on the verges of the B1228 close to the airfield. This road becomes almost completely blocked. Last year when I left the display slightly early, it was impossible for two vehicles to pass in opposite directions jus near the airfield.
Apart from watching a charity event without paying which takes a great amount of hard work and money to set up, if an accident occurred the emergency equipment would have great trouble getting into and leaving the airfield.
Finally, will people please stop ringing or visiting the Yorkshire Air Museum to inquire when the Red Arrows are on? These people only wish to position themselves outside the airfield to watch. The answer is: "We don't know and even if we did we wouldn't tell you."
