CALLING all film buffs, TV addicts and pub quiz aficionados across York.

The city's St John Ambulance staff and volunteers are appealing for local teams to join their bumper fun quiz, which aims to raise hundreds of pounds for the Evening Press-backed Lifesaver Appeal.

The ongoing appeal aims to raise £42,000 for a new Crusader ambulance for use in the York area.

Appeal manager Dave Sutton said: "We want to find the brightest professionals in York, whether they are estate agents, hairdressers, shop assistants, solicitors or tour guides.

"We are hoping for 100 teams of four people and the questions will cover subjects such as general knowledge, television, film, food and music.

"So it doesn't matter what your specialist subject is, every team has a chance of winning."

The quiz is taking place on Tuesday, November 19, at the York Viking Moathouse Hotel in North Street, York, from 7.30pm and there will be a range of winners' prizes and and on-the-spot prizes available.

Teams are also being asked to raise sponsorship for every question they get right - again there will be prizes available for the team who raises the most cash through their family, friends and colleagues.

Mr Sutton said: "We think there might be a bit of rivalry between the teams so it should be a good competitive - but fun - evening.

Tickets for the event cost £40 per team of four to include a buffet supper. For an entry form write to Dave Sutton at St John Ambulance, St John House, 236 Marton Road, Middlesbrough, TS4 2EZ,

If you would like to support the appeal without taking part in the quiz then cheques can be made payable to St John Ambulance Appeal, c/o David Sutton at the above address, or go into any high street bank and pay into account number 60382078, sort code 20-82-94.
