WITH so many competitors already in the field, it is highly unlikely the Rexton sports utility will make a massive impact, yet it is from Korean manufacturer SsangYong, a leading 4x4 producer, and builders of cars for more than 50 years.
The Rexton range has only recently returned to the United Kingdom market, having been first launched here a few years ago, and then disappearing virtually without trace, as distributors changed alliances.
Anyway, the name is back on the market and there are now several in the range available. Latest is the 290E turbo diesel with a price tag of £17,499 on the road.
Rexton's marketing gurus say the five-door has been designed specifically to satisfy demands of owners who need a utility workhorse mixed with a touch of thoroughbred comfort and performance.
The 2.9-litre diesel engine produces 120Ps at 4,000rpm and 25.5kgm of torque at 2,400rpm, so is capable of providing serious pulling power, able to tow 3.5-tonnes.
The part-time all-wheel drive system allows shifting from two-wheel drive high ratio to four wheel drive high ratio and back at the push of a button, and without having to stop. To shift into four-wheel drive low ratio for some serious off-roading the car must be stationary.
Combined fuel economy is said to be 30.4mpg, and emission value 244g/km.
Tucked away in the steel safety cell that makes the cabin, the driver is faced by a dashboard of clear dials, a leather steering wheel and a multitude of storage places to hold CDs, maps, spare change and also sunglasses.
There is a powered sunroof, electric windows, and heated front windscreen and back window, as well as heated door mirrors. The back seats can be folded down to extend the boot area.
Safety features include driver and passenger airbags, and there is anti-lock braking with brake assist.
For those buyers who want to personalise their vehicle, options include factory fitted side steps, retractable load cover, tow bar and a load liner.
All Rexton models, and there are five in the range, come with three years or 6 0,000 miles warranty, a three-year unlimited paint finish warranty and six year anti-corrosion warranty.
Service intervals for the diesel range are every six months or 6,000 miles.
Insurance for the diesel models is 11a.
Finally, consideration is being given to providing a commercial version of the 290E.
