A CONTACTS list offering details of people seeking "liaisons with the opposite sex" has been landing on the doormats of York people.
Janet Kitchen, of Ashley Park Road, said she was disturbed to get a letter through the post which offered her the details of more than 30 men and women looking for intimate relationships.
The letter, which came from an address in London, tells recipients to quote box numbers when replying.
Mrs Kitchen believes that the company had somehow got hold of her address and sent her the list.
York trading standards chiefs have advised anyone who had received this kind of letter and were concerned about its contents to contact them. Among those included in the letter are: "Swansea woman (late 40s) with unsatisfactory husband seeks man with unsatisfactory wife for immoral support".
Another reads: "Satanist, 57, seeks curvy lady, age unimportant, single or married, for one-to-one Satanic pact...I will be your mentor".
Mrs Kitchen said: "It is not that I find it particularly shocking, but it is a letter I don't want landing on my doormat. I know it will also be offensive to some people.
"Some people might not laugh about it. More concerning is how they have got hold of my address, and what else are they going to use if for? I don't know who has sent this and, although we all get junk mail, it is definitely not needed.
"I wonder if anyone else has received similar pages of rubbish and it's a pity the originator isn't polite enough to name him or herself."
Matt Boxall, at City of York Council's trading standards department, urged anyone who had received a similar letter to contact the department.
He said: "We would definitely encourage people to give us a call about anything that they have received through the post, whether it is letter or a scam.
"If they call, we can point them in the right direction. For example, there is a company called the Mail Preferencing Service, which people can register with and they will filter out junk mail."
