ARISING from the changes in local politics, the library service in York will not be able to go forward with several schemes it had in the pipeline.

As a result, either directly or indirectly, "imagineyork", a Lottery-aided scheme for putting pictures of York on the Internet, is in danger of folding at the end of September (Yesterday Once More, July 19).

The matter is more urgent because staff have already been given their redundancy notice; once they go, the work is likely to cease.

"imagineyork" has given pleasure to many both locally and further afield, shown by the number of e-mails received. It has also contributed to the Evening Press series, which has raised much interest.

There are thousands of photographs still to be processed and people and organisations are still offering collections. Most of the local sources have been helpful in giving copyright.

Much of the work identifying the photographs has been done by volunteers and they are happy to continue.

Because of the interest shown in the project and the good image of the city shown throughout the world, I would ask that some way be found for the project to continue, or a valuable part of our city's heritage could be lost, both to local interest and future generations.
