POLICE today named the man they wanted to question over the murder of two sisters in a village near Selby.
Officers warned the public not to approach Mark Richard Hobson, 34, who lives at the flat in Millfield Drive, Camblesforth, where the bodies of the two women were discovered yesterday.
At a press conference today, Det Supt Javad Ali said: "Members of the public are strongly advised not to approach him, but to contact the police immediately."
Hobson is described as white, 5ft 9ins, of slim build, with a shaven head. He has a two-inch scar above his left eye.
He was wearing a coffee-coloured jacket, white T-shirt and jeans.
The names of the two women have not been released by the police, but they were in their twenties.
Asked whether there was nay link between the Camblesforth killings and the murder of an elderly couple at Strensall near York, Deputy Chief Constable Roger Baker said they were keeping an open mind.
A post mortem examination was being held to establish how they died.
A neighbour living next to a flat where the bodies were found has described how screaming was heard during the night they died.
The man said his wife heard the screams in the early hours of yesterday , but thought nothing of them because of the frequent rows they overheard.
Police discovered the bodies of the sisters when they were called to the flat at 8am yesterday.
The man, who did not wish to be named, said: "We were really shocked. My wife said she heard screaming in the night but didn't think anything of it.
"There was always a lot of arguing going on round there."
He said Hobson lived there with his girlfriend. "They haven't been living there that long," the neighbour said.
"He was about 30 and I knew him to say hello to but that was about it. He lived there with his girlfriend. She was in her early 20s, had glasses and was very quiet."
The man said he was woken up on yesterday morning by police who searched his garden for evidence and sealed off the area for most of the day.
Police are treating the deaths of the women as murder. It is believed that they were stabbed, but police have not confirmed this.
Mr Hobson's mother Sandra, who lives less than half a mile away from the flat where the two women were found dead, looked visibly shaken but refused to comment on the incident today.
Her neighbour in Prospect Walk, Dana Blackburn, 21, said: "I really feel for Sandra and Eric Marshall, her partner. They're lovely people. The first thing I knew about it was when the police came and told us all to go inside.
"I had to grab my little girl and flee indoors.
"I kind of knew Mark and his girlfriend, Clare, just to say hello to - it's that kind of place, everybody knows each other."
A Home Office pathologist carried out a post-mortem examination last night to establish the cause of death but the results have not been released.
A neighbour, who did not wish to be named, said she had seen two men emerge from the flat in a distressed state.
They sat crying on the kerbside, before returning inside the house.
Shortly afterwards, a fleet of police cars pulled into the street with their blue lights flashing.
The area was cordoned off and the men, whom she believed to be aged about 30 and 60, left with police officers.
A burgundy Ford Escort saloon and a metallic light blue Peugeot 306 parked outside the row of houses were also cordoned off.
"The younger man was upset and saying: 'I had only been with her 16 weeks today,' or something like that," said the neighbour.
"It is awful when it happens on your doorstep like this."
Shocked onlookers gathered as investigators in white suits entered the house to begin their hunt for clues.
It is believed that armed police and officers with dogs carried out a raid on another house in the village yesterday afternoon.
Simon Palmer, who lives near the Millfield Drive property, said he did not know the identity of the women, but he believed that 34-year-old Hobson had been living at the address.
The property is part of an L-shaped terrace of four houses, known as a "quarter block".
At about 1.30pm, a couple arrived in Millfield Drive wanting to visit the house where the bodies were found.
They did not wish to comment to the Evening Press, but a neighbour who spoke to them said that Mr Hobson had offered to sell them a Peugeot 306 the previous evening for £400.
The neighbour said he told them the car belonged to a relative with leukaemia, and that they were emigrating.
Today, the house remained cordoned off while officers continued a full forensic investigation.
The family of the two women, who are being comforted by police liaison officers, have said they do not wish to comment.
Anyone who may have seen the women or any activity around the house between midday on Saturday and 9am yesterday should phone York CID on 01904 631321 or the incident room on 01904 669651
