THE spectacular stunts of a top military motorcycle display team took centre stage at the annual Army Open Day in York.
Riders from the White Helmets Royal Signals Motorcycle Team wowed onlookers by performing such feats as forming human pyramids and leaping through hoops of fire.
Other attractions at the event at Imphal Barracks, in Fulford Road, on Saturday, included a freefall display by the Royal Signals Parachute Display team, and a flypast by a Spitfire to commemorate the Battle of Britain, which attracted a huge cheer.
Five military and cadet bands were on hand to entertain the crowd, who could also enjoy Gurkha music and dancing, Highland dancing, martial arts demonstrations, historical re-enactments and storytelling.
Those wanting a taste of Army life could visit the displays of high-tech military vehicles and equipment, tackle a climbing wall or obstacle course, and watch chefs from different areas do culinary battle.
Army spokesperson Penny Veale said the day had gone very well, despite the torrential rain.
"A lot of people have turned out and we managed to have our sky and motorcycle displays," she said.
The proceeds of the open day will go to charity.
