National Railway Museum bosses are confident Flying Scotsman will be steamed up and raring to go for its first scheduled services since being saved for the nation.

The world-famous loco is currently undergoing tests in an attempt to prevent a repeat of the minor mechanical glitch that scuppered its planned run to the National Railway Museum's Railfest event in June.

The locomotive was supposed to steam into the city with more than 400 VIPs aboard. But a fault meant it had to be hauled in by a diesel locomotive.

A museum spokeswoman today said she expected the fully-serviced Scotsman to be ready for a series of summer tours to Scarborough, starting on July 20.

Jim Rees, rail vehicle collections manager at the York museum, said: "Flying Scotsman is currently undergoing steam and mechanical tests following an intense programme of repairs.

"This began after Railfest on its arrival at the NRM workshop, in preparation for its main line summer tours."

Flying Scotsman will run twice daily return trips between York and Scarborough, on Tuesdays to Thursdays, between July 20 and August 31.
