PUPILS at a York school learned how to connect a phone, look after small animals and even put together a newspaper, as part of an Industry Day.
About 230 Year 9 pupils at Joseph Rowntree School were learning about the skills needed for a life in the workplace, during the special day.
The Evening Press supported the event, giving some of the pupils a chance to practise their reporting and writing skills by putting together a newspaper recording the day's activities.
The newspaper was one of 19 companies to give pupils at the school an insight into working in industry.
Students were divided into small groups and assigned companies to visit. Some spent time with representatives from Bettys Caf and tea rooms - serving tea, coffee and cakes to hungry pupils and staff.
Other activities were provided by Askham Bryan College, which brought along small animals for pupils to handle, Portakabin Ltd, Nestl, City of York planning department, Network Rail and the Institute of Civil Engineers.
