A VAN driver died following a head-on smash on the A19 near Tollerton.
Two fire crews from Acomb and Easingwold used specialist cutting equipment to free the 36-year-old man from Gateshead, who was trapped in the wreckage for more than an hour.
His white-coloured Ford Transit van, being driven from Easingwold towards York, was in collision with a Mercedes lorry being driven in the opposite direction by a 42-year-old man from the York area, yesterday, at about 12.40pm.
The driver of the Mercedes lorry was uninjured.
The Yorkshire Air Ambulance crew assisted paramedics who took the driver of the Transit to York Hospital.
Any witnesses are asked to phone the police on 01723 509555.
