YORK international bowls player Michelle Mooring has proved she is the best woman singles player in the county by winning the Yorkshire Champion of Champions' trophy.

The Bert Keech Bowls Club star took the title with a 21-19 win over Kingston, Hull, opponent Linda Wiles in the final at Northallerton.

Mooring won six games in the early rounds at York's Clarence Gardens to reach the semi-finals at Northallerton.

Playing at the venue for the first time in her career she found the rink tricky but always had the edge on her way to a 21-16 semi-final success.

The final was fairly even until the later stages when she played some big shots to give her victory.

This was the second time in the space of a few days she had beaten Wiles. The previous Thursday she defeated her 21-18 in the county Top Ten competition at the Bert Keech Club, where Mooring is ladies' champion.

On Saturday (July 10) at Clarence Gardens, she is playing in the Top Ten semi-finals, aiming to pick up her second trophy in a week.

Later this month Mooring will be skipping her England rink in the British Isles Women's Under-25 International Championship at Llandrindod Wells in Wales.

Last year Mooring, who works for Nestl Rowntree in their sales department, won a nail-biting last end to clinch the title for England.

As soon as the home international team series is completed, Mooring and Carole McLean, of Scarborough, will be playing in the British Isles Women's Under-25 Pairs Championship at the same venue.

She has also been selected to play for England in the Rossborough Trophy annual indoor Test match against Jersey on the island in October.

"I am not eligible to play at under-25 indoors any more and it could be that the selectors chose me for the Jersey match to consider me for the full international side in the future," said Mooring.
