TWENTY years ago York woke to the news that its Minster was still standing only thanks to an heroic effort by more than 100 firefighters.
The South Transept blaze came frighteningly close to consuming the entire cathedral, as our supplement earlier this week revealed.
Tonight the General Synod meets in York. No doubt a prayer will be said in thanks for the Minster's rescue and restoration.
That will be reiterated by many residents as they gaze at our greatest building today.
