Upcoming junior rugby league in Selby was given a boost after a fine performance by Selby Warriors under-11s earned them third place in a junior festival tournament against long-established clubs.
In their opening game, underdogs Selby were beaten only by a frantic last-second try by Castleford Panthers, Josh Parkin (2), Adam Chappell and Luke Liddle having crossed for the Warriors.
A lacklustre tackling display cost Selby in their game against Doncaster Toll Bar, though Liddle scored again.
The combination of individual tries from Conor Smith, Chappell and Stevie Bell and improved tackling gave Selby a 14-6 half-time lead over eventual tournament winners Thornhill, whose blushes were saved by a late try.
The final game was against unbeaten pre-tournament favourites Featherstone Lions, who had to win to finish champions but were shocked by a fine display in which Daniel Bate (2) and Chappell (2) were among the scorers as the Warriors finished on a high.
Chappell was Selby's player of the tournament, Luke Liddle was coach's choice and Saul Gentles was among the most improved players.
Training takes place at Sandhill Lane every Wednesday, 6-7pm, new and old players are welcome.
