THE only Mystery Plays production in York this summer hits the stage tonight.
Friends of York Mystery Plays are presenting The Last Supper, a sequence of plays that tells the story of the period leading to Christ's betrayal.
The production gives audiences the chance to witness Biblical drama amid the continuing uncertainty over when the next full-scale plays - traditionally organised in four-yearly cycles and last held in the Minster in 2000 - will take place in the city.
Ray Alexander, artistic director with the Friends, said rehearsals were going well. The cast of 30 actors had reached "performance standard" and were now raring to go.
He said: "The performance is intended to show the intensity and the passion that was written into the earliest plays in the English language, and performed in the medieval city of York."
The Last Supper runs every night at 8pm until Saturday at the Stagecoach Studio Theatre, in Monkgate.
Tickets cost £8 with £6 concessions. Phone 01904 658338 for information.
