Further to the Barbican debate, nobody doubts the closure of Walmgate Bar will cause traffic congestion. Up to now the emphasis has been on the jams that will form on Walmgate.
However, the closure of one in-bound lane on Lawrence Street will lead to severe queuing. Every local taxi and van driver will use Green Dyke Lane to access Thief Lane and Heslington Road.
Local car owners will follow suit; and how will they emerge from Heslington Road? Right on the Barbican/Kent Street junction, where the council plans to allow 240 flats, a 135-bedroom hotel, a new leisure complex and a revamped nightspot/conference/God-only-knows-what centre.
The roads cannot cope with this increased traffic. We have only one chance left of making this council see sense. Come to the public meeting at the St Lawrence Working Men's Club on Lawrence Street at 7.30pm tomorrow.
