MAXINE GORDON offers some bright ideas for travelling light.
WHEN packing for my holidays I follow one golden rule: fill the case, and then empty half of it.
After all, how many sleeveless T-shirts, flowery skirts and coloured sandals does a girl really need on her summer hols? Certainly not one outfit for each day of the trip, as my mother used to insist.
After years of following her example and struggling with bursting backpacks and bulging suitcases, I now follow a more sensible mantra: less is more.
The key to success is being organised and co-ordinated. Take clothes which can double up for day and evening wear, in colours and shades which complement.
And don't forget you can usually get your clothes laundered at your location - or do a bit of hand washing.
Another good tip is to wear key pieces on the journey itself.
Don't wear heavy jeans, a thick sweater and clumpy boots which are no use until your return.
Exactly what to wear depends on your destination. If you are heading for a beach holiday, opt for light, comfy trousers such as sweat pants or cargo cut-offs and a zip-up fleece, which will be ideal should you encounter a chilly spell during your trip. Flip-flops or light trainers are the perfect footwear and will be worn on holiday.
Smart but casual must be the watchwords for anyone making for a city this summer. There's nothing more likely to mark you out as a tourist than if you try to hail a cab in New York in the tiniest shorts and the flimsiest of shoes.
But smart doesn't have to be stuffy. Again make sure comfort is in the driving seat and opt for a printed skirt, or stylish jeans or summer trousers, teamed with a bright, light jacket and some super-cool, ultra-chic accessories such as sunglasses, a hat and scarf.
Presentable shoes are a must, so slip on those kitten heels to add an air of sophistication - and kick them off under your seat once on board the plane.
A pashmina or pretty sarong is a must-have on holiday. They are versatile and can be worn as a scarf, used as a pillow, or to lie on at the beach.
Make a fashion statement with your accessories. Big and bold are the styles for this summer, so splash out on a colourful bag which can hold all your travel essentials: passport, purse, books, make-up, water bottle - and which can double as beach bag later.
Fifties-style scarves are back in vogue, and look great tied around the neck and teamed with turned-up jeans or capri pants and flat shoes - and are perfect for wearing as a bandana on the beach to protect your hair from the sun.
And don't forget those sunglasses. No vacation is complete without a healthy does of sun, sea and specs.
