MR Usherwood's comments are typical of a person who is actually causing traffic problems in York (Letters, June 23).
He gets off the train and then presumably gets the bus to Askham Bar. Then drives all the way back to the station and crosses Lendal Bridge and proceeds along Gillygate.
Now if his journey only took half an hour, he could not live much further than Clarence Street. What is the point of his motor tour of York?
Walking from Clarence Street would not take as long and there is a perfectly good bus service direct to the station.
Lendal Bridge is usually blocked with stationary traffic so cyclists have to move on to the footpath to get anywhere. They wouldn't have to do this if people like Mr Usherwood avoided unnecessary car journeys.
The incident on Tadcaster Road reported by Mr Usherwood is typical of thoughtless car drivers. There is a cycle lane all the way down and cars turning left must give way to cyclists in the cycle lane even though it is on their left hand side.
Most often they don't, which is usually sheer ignorance.

...IS it just me or does anyone else feel the same?
Why does everyone these days insist on driving full speed everywhere?
This is especially noticeable on the A64 York to Tadcaster at Bilbrough Road works. There is a 40mph speed restriction, but it's a joke, the minority do, but it's quite frustrating when you look in your rear view mirror to see the car behind sitting on your bumper - pushing you to go faster or move over. With the amount of cars whizzing past doing well over the 40mph limit, the police would have made a packet with speed cameras. Do these people really want to arrive dead on time?
