New Earswick All Blacks winger Matt Godfrey will make his international debut this weekend when he plays for the West Indies Wahoos at the York International 9s.
The York 9s will be played at Heworth ARLFC's Elm Park Way ground this Saturday and Sunday and should be a fantastic rugby league spectacle.
Godfrey qualifies for the team through his father's West Indian origin and is relishing the chance to represent the Wahoos and hopefully build on the outfit's impressive start when they won the Middlesex 9s Qualifiers in St Alban's a month ago.
The 25-year-old had provisionally discussed the chance of playing in the tournament with the Windies' high performance director Dean Thomas and was pleased to learn he had been named in the 16-man squad.
Thomas knows all about the winger - twin brother of Knights flier Alex - as the pair played at New Earswick together, while the Wahoos' sports therapist is Godfrey's current All Blacks team-mate Mark Tipping.
The make-up of the squad is based on those who played in the West Indies' first outing at the Middlesex 9s a month ago.
However, the side will also be bolstered by former Castleford Super League player Jermaine Wray, who this season has been starring for Hunslet, and former England representative Rodger Simpson.
West Indies squad: Danny Mills (capt), Irvin Greenwood, Joe Brown, Damien Martinez, Nigel Arismendez, Selwyn St Bernard, Verne-Bruce Sylvester, Alex Rowe, Jermaine Wray, Matthew Godfrey, Rodger Simpson, Ricky Davey, Corey Simms, Gavin Calloo, Maurice Mayne, Collin Gellineau.
