THE mystery of football's offside rule will be unravelled at this year's York Learning Festival.
Tutors at Future Prospects, in Swinegate, will use digital technology to explain the complicated rule on Saturday, July 3, from 11am, as part of a drive to encourage adults back into learning.
More than 100 taster courses and activities are on offer at the festival, which will run between July 1 and July 10.
Andrew Cambridge, learning and work advisor at Future Prospects, said: "There's massive enthusiasm for Euro 2004 and we thought that explaining the offside rule was an innovative way to draw people into learning.
"The offside rule is quite complex and there have been changes made to it recently that baffle even the soccer pundits, so it's actually quite a challenge to understand it in just one hour."
Festival organiser Liz McNeil said: "This is a perfect example of how learning can relate to everyday interests.
"By tapping into something people feel passionate about - like football - we're encouraging people to give learning a go."
