IN response to Major Jessop's letter (June 5), it was expected that the Barbican would be undergoing a major modernisation later this year and for that reason the Royal British Legion were advised to book one of the other halls that they have used in the past for their event.
It is only very recently that plans have changed because a start on the modernisation work has been delayed (by central Government dithering on planning matters).
This means that there is a possibility that both the Festival of Remembrance and other events such as the snooker tournament could take place at the Barbican in November if the organisers wish.
The Major may reflect that the considerable refurbishment work being undertaken at the Memorial Gardens this year is a tangible sign of the respect and priority that both the council and the local community have for the memory of those that fought for our country and made the supreme sacrifice.

...THE appalling decision to give priority to snooker over the annual remembrance commemoration at the Barbican beggars belief. I would suggest that our penny-pinching council visit the war graves in France and Belgium and then decide where priorities lie.
Incidentally, parking charges in Chepstow are 30p for three hours and £2 for 24 hours. If they can do it why can't our council do so, especially in view of the huge finance raised by exorbitant council tax from the huge amount of flats that have invaded the city recently.
